China poses not just a security issue to Asian
countries, but also an economic one, says think tank.
“It’s fair to say that there is growing concern about
the risks China poses, but right now we’re at the starting line of saying, yes,
we agree that collective action against China would be effective. But when we
start talking about an actual road map, there are a great number of differences,
not just between Asia and NATO, but also amongst the Asian countries as well.
So NATO, of course, is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. And it’s focused
on security. It’s focused on the Atlantic, this, the risks that China poses.
For Asian countries, it’s not just a security issue, but it’s alsoand economic
one. So the interest that Asia has to confront the China challenge is far
greater than in the Atlantic. But at the same time, there is this divide within
Asia as well. Yeah, but my whole point here being that framing this.
Geopolitical development the evolution of the geopolitical situation.
Given China’s rise, framing it as conflict, framing it
as competition. Framing it as a security threat is surely a slightly strange
position to be taking. I mean, we’ve already seen Russia’s reaction to the
presence of NATO right on its border are we not going to just put ourselves in
these exactly the same position? If NATO
decides to come and camp on the border of China? What we’re trying to see here
is taking the good best practices that we’ve seen from unity regarding Ukraine,
so we’re seen a coalition of countries of like minded countries, countires that
share are facing not just a China challenge, but a risk to the stability and
the existing order in the world. And so what has been effective in confronting
Russia has been this collective effort. The question now is can we do that in
confronting the China challenge as well? And this is certainly a step in that
direction. But whether it actually has legs and whether it’s actually
sustainable or not is another question.
